CAT FANCIERS PLAN ANNIVERSARY SHOW Portland Press Herald, 21st March 1954
SKOWHEGAN, March 20 - The Central Maine Cat Club, which observed its first anniversary this week, is readying plans for a cat show and a cat picture contest, scheduled for May 15 at the Lakewood Country Club. The club, which has its headquarters here, was organized March 15, last year, with about 35 charter members. Its first cat show and cat picture contest was held at the Woodshed Theater, East Skowhegan, June 20, with more than 300 cat fanciers in attendance. Club officials expect the number of animals to be shown this year will be well in excess of the 40 cats entered in last year's show.

While members are interested in all types of cats ranging from Siamese to tabbies, primary interest rests naturally on the Maine coon cat, whose origin is still an unsolved mystery. Club members point out that the Maine coon cat used to have a definite class in cat shows before the turn of the century. Miss Alta L. Smith of Hinckley is president of the club, and Miss Ruby F. Dyer of Skowhegan is secretary-treasurer.

CAT SHOW CHAIRMAN OF JUDGES NAMED Portland Press Herald, 22nd April 1956, Page 16
Skowhegan, April 21 - Dr. Rachel Salisbury of Milton Junction, Wis., formerly of Portland, will be chairman of judging at the Central Maine Cat Show here May 12. Dr. Salisbury, a college instructor and author of college textbooks, has just written '"Standards for Judging Maine Cats" which will be used for the first time at the show. 'Cats' Magazine" is arranging to publish the new standards for judging Maine cats as soon as they have been established by Maine club.

Dr. Salisbury attended Portland schools. She has taught in Missouri, Michigan and Wisconsin. She's the owner of the Wanaki Cattery in Milton Junction. In determining standards for judging Maine cats she has taken into consideration the fact that Maine cats often show traces of fancy breeds imported to Maine in the 1850's. At present Dr. Salisbury is experimenting to establish the Maine Coon cat as a breed recognized by the Cat Fancy. She will be the guest of club secretary Miss Ruby Dyer while in Skowhegan. Mrs. Mercedes Edwards of Augusta, Mrs. Lanesta Ham of Woolrich and Mrs. Muriel Goodwin of Farmington, N. H., will judge the Purebred Section at the show. Dr. Salisbury has entered her pedigreed Persians in official shows throughout the Middle West. Last January she attended a school for judges at the Ohio Valley Cat Club.

NAME CHAIRMAN FOR CM CAT SHOW SATURDAY Waterville Morning Sentinel, 7th May 1957
Alfred T. Morrill of Carlsbad, Calif., will be chairman of the judging staff for the fifth Central Maine Cat Show which will be held in Skowhegan Saturday, May 18. The Standards for Judging Maine Cats, which were introduced at last year's show by their author, Dr. Rachel Salisbury of Milton Junction, Wis., will be in effect this year. These standards differ from other official guides by recognizing distinctive features of the Maine cat and allowing permissible variants. Excerpts from them state:

"The Maine coon differs in several ways from the Persian long haired cat. . .he stands taller on his legs, the body is longer, the tail more flowing. Except for the coat, the coon cat has more resemblances with the domestic short hair than with the Persian. On the other hand, the Maine short hair has certain characteristics that compare more closely with the Siamese than with the domestic short hair. The Maine short hair is vibrant like the Siamese, full of energy, curiosity and affection, and has some of the same panther-like qualities of movement, Maine cats, either short or long haired, are allowed white trim on their coats, extra toes, bobbed tails, and any eye color that is distinct and brilliant."

Other members of the judging staff include Miss Laura Carpenter of Augusta, Mrs. Mary Tracy, Bangor, Mrs. Allison Day, Waterville, Miss. Jennie Nutter, Winthrop, all of whom studied under Dr. Salisbury last year; Mrs. Helen Dunning, Bangor, and Mrs. Una Page, Brewer.

Standards set by the Cat Fancy will prevail for purebred pets. They will be judged by Mrs. Wallace Ham of Woolwich and Mrs. Muriel Goodwin, Farmington, N.H., who are affiliated with the Fancy. Cats and kittens from registered catteries are not judged at Central Maine Cat Shows but are brought by their breeders for exhibition only. Manx and Siamese from Ledgemere Cattery, Woolwich; Persians from Yankee Coast Cattery, Freeport; Siamese, Burmese and Abyssinians from Rosa Noma Cattery, Palmer, Mass.; and Siamese, Persians and Tabbies from Willow Mist Cattery, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, are among the breeders' stock which Central Maine Cat Club members may exhibit at the show this year.
