REPORTS FROM EARLY BRITISH CAT SHOWS 1914

1914 starts off optimistically, and there is even a cat show to raise money for war funds, but during the year cat shows inevitably go into a decline as attention, and money, turns away from frivolous pursuits and are directed towards the war. There is some attempt at maintaining normality. Cat shows and clubs are suspended during the war and some of the familiar names are missing when shows properly resume in 1920. Many of the early exhibitors and organisers were from military families.

1914 (SOUTHERN COUNTIES) WESTMINSTER CAT SHOW

A RECORD CAT SHOW Staffordshire Sentinel, 9th January 1914
There were no fewer than 856 entries at the show of the Southern Counties' Cat Club, which opened at the Royal Horticultural Hall, London. This number, it was stated, not only constitutes a “record" for this club, but also for any cat show in England. Gertrude Lady Decies had some of her famous champions on show, including “White Satin,” “Rex,” and “Don Silverando.” Lady Alexander was a very prominent exhibitor in the shorthaired classes, while other well-known exhibitors were Mrs Clive Behrens, Miss Cheetham, Mrs Scoville Hopwood, Mrs Slingsby, Mrs Stephen, and Mrs Western. Longhaired blue males and blue females were remarkably large classes, and Siamese classes were also well filled. Unlike the dogs, the cats do not recline on luxurious silk cushions, nor do they have their cages lined with embroidered hangings. They have to be content with ordinary beds of clean straw.

Mrs George M. Hepworth, of Leeds, and Bedford Park, London, won three firsts and the championship with her Siamese cat, Winhue Maysie, at the Southern Counties Cat Club Show at the Horticultural Hall, Westminster. She also won the novice cup, presented by the Siamese Cat Club, and silver spoon presented by the Richmond Club for the best short-haired cat in the show, and the Southern Counties gold medal for the best short-haired cat.

SOUTHERN COUNTIES’ CAT CLUB. Hampshire Advertiser, 10th January 1914
The Southern Counties’ Cat Club seeks to for the domestic what the Kennel Club has done tor the dog. The primary object of the club is the improved breeding of the cat that it may be more of a thing of beauty and household pleasure than it has hitherto been, and its contribution to the purpose in view is the annual cat show, known as the “Westminster Show,” which will be held this year at the Horticultural Hall, Vincent-square. Westminster. The entries will be arranged in about 100 classes, and over 200 special prizes are offered.

TALK OF THE TOWN Pall Mall Gazette, 10th January 1914
“Gaddesden Blue Betty of Hyver” is the short and simple name of one of the animals to be seen at the cat show at the Horticultural Hall. One wonders what its friends really call it. Cat nomenclature, as a matter of fact, is often clumsy and unoriginal, and has not reached the high level of ingenuity which one finds in the case of, say, toy dogs. Royalty provided at least two names for the cats on show: to wit “Princess Patricia” and “Tatiana.” Quite a number of the show cats have little toys in their pens. Gaily-coloured balls, feathers on the end of a piece of ribbon, a woolly dog-doll, a miniature Fuzzy-Wuzzy, and an elephant with spring trunk and tail are among the playthings for the pampered darlings of feline aristocracy.

SUCCESSFUL EXETER EXHIBITER Western Times, 12th January 1914
At the Southern Counties' Cat Show, held at the Royal Horticultural Hall, Westminster, January 8th and 9th, Miss Clarke, of Mont le Grand, was among the successful exhibitors. Her longhair Chinchilla kitten, "Don Fernando," won two firsts in classes of sixteen and seventeen, and besides several specials was awarded a silver challenge cup and silver medal as second best kitten in the show. In silver tabby longhairs, Miss Edith Clarke won first and championship with her adult female "Devon Dimpsey." "Lady May" and "Priscilla," kittens of her breeding, were awarded first and second in two classes, the former winning a silver challenge cup. Her young silver tabby male, "Devon Pixy," was recently sold to go to America at a good price. He had been a prize-winner at nine shows, and held three silver challenge cups and several medals.

CHAMPIONSHIP CAT SHOW Grantham Journal, 17th January 1914
At the Southern Counties’ Championship Cat Show, held at the Horticultural Hall, Westminster, on January 8th and 9th, “Romeo of Highgate,” the property of Mrs Arthur Hutchinson, was one of the prize-winners in the Blue Persian Class. This was the largest show on record, 866 entries being made.

WESTMINSTER CAT SHOW. A SPLENDID ARRAY OF EXHIBITS. Gentlewoman - Saturday 24 January 1914
Southern Counties Cat Club is doing for the domestic cat what the Kennel Club has done for the dog. The primary object the Club has undertaken is the improved breeding of the cat, that it may be more a thing of beauty and a household pleasure than it has hitherto been. There is much to be desired in this way, and the Club's contribution to the scheme is their annual Cat Show, held at the Royal Horticultural Hall, where there were 100 classes and upwards of 200 special prizes on offer. Entries totalled up to close on 900 which is a record for any cat show, and demonstrates in what a healthy state is the "fancy," and, judging by the capital "gate," the general public is also keenly interested. One of the most successful longhair exhibitors was Gertrude Lady Decies, who won no less than six championships, Sir Claude and Lady Alexander and the Hon. Mrs. Behrens taking the principal honours in shorthairs.

The feature of the show was undoubtedly the Blue longhairs, both as regards numbers and quality; it must have been a difficult task for the judge to select the winners where all were good. The best male was Mrs. Watson's Barry Blue, an extra fine specimen. Abyssinians had some typical exhibits. This charming variety will always be rare because the kittens are so difficult to rear in the early stage. They are the oldest known breed, and greatly resemble the Egyptian cats. The two colours predominating are silver and brown, the former being the more difficult to obtain. Abyssinians are very companionable and intelligent, and command good prices. Chinchillas, especially the females were numerous, and in the Black classes the judge created quite a sensation by withholding first prize from Champion Dirty Dick, an unbeaten cat who was shown in perfect condition. Siamese made a fine show; this breed is booming and has made tremendous strides of late; they are very faithful and intelligent creatures, and will follow like dogs. In Siam they are sacred, the belief in the Buddhist religion being that the souls of the Royal dead pass into cats; hence the powers that be in the Palace at Bangkok do not like them to be exported, and every temple has its sacred cat. Whites were about an average; Smokes are improving, the kitten class being especially good, numbering seventeen, and there was a big class of twelve orange male Tabbies, which was somewhat unusual. Chinchillas, Smoke and Blue kittens seem to be the most popular, and undoubtedly one of the most attractive features was Mrs. Bennett's two white kittens, Rokeles Callan and Rokeles Couthie, wonderfully pure in colour and with grand coats. The only Tortoiseshell-and-White shorthair male cat known , namely Lady Alexander's Champion Ballochmyle Bachelor, took a first and championship; another so-called appeared at the show, but he was not really the right colour, being merely a Tortoiseshell cat with white feet. The special prize for the best in the show, always a most coveted honour, fell to Mrs. Slingsby's Ch Rosette of Thorpe, a wonderful eight -year-old. queen in glorious coat and colouring. This is the first time this variety has secured this chief award, and is a great triumph, as the honour has generally gone to a Blue or a Chinchilla.

1914 NORTHERN COUNTIES (HARROGATE) CAT SHOW

CHAMPIONSHIP CATS. FINE SHOW AT NORTHERN COUNTIES’ EXHIBITION. Leeds Mercury, 30th January 1914
The Northern Counties’ Cat Club promoted their annual show at Harrogate yesterday with great success. About 186 cats were benched, in sixty-one classes, and these included most of the champion cats in the North. The premier award for the best cat in the show was taken by Mrs. Slingsby, of Thorpe Underwood Hall, York, with the pearl chinchilla Silver Comet of Thorpe, which has won seven championships, and was the admiration of all present. Mrs. Slingsby also won the premier award given by the Chinchilla and Silver Society with the same cat. This lady took the Southern Counties’ Cat Club gold medal for best stud cat with [Silver] Comet of Thorpe, and took the breeders' first in the blue adult long-hairs class.

The Hon. Mrs. Clive Behrens, of Swinton Grange, Malton, gained premier award for the best short-haired cat in the show with Wynnstay Lupin, which is a blue Russian of good level colour, although it was thought that but for showing temper when being judged, Lady Gertrude Decies’s Fulmer Dreamy Cutbarth would have run the winner very closely, if not actually getting the award. Wynnstay Lupin also won its owner the British Blue Cup given by the Short-haired Cat Society. Messrs. Brown and Wilson, Newcastle, took the award for the best kitten in the show with a youngster of a rich colour [red tabby]. The sire of this kitten, Eden Rufus, shown by Mrs. F. W. Western, of Bedfordshire, was an easy first in the red tabby class, this cat having already taken seven championships. The best short-haired kitten in the show was declared to be Bit of Fame, shown by Mr. James Reid, of Glasgow.

In addition to the ordinary prize-list there were 30 cups and 110 special prizes. Mrs. Slingsby’s Chinchilla male Persian, Silver Comet of Thorpe, a long-haired cat in the pink of condition, was adjudged the best in the show, and also captured several other first prizes. Miss G. Cheetham’s (Brighouse) blue Persian, Oakland’s Steadfast, was a strong runner-up. 1914 RICHMOND DOG AND CAT SHOW

cat show

ARISTOCRATIC CATS. Dundee Courier, 9th July 1914
There was quite few thousand pounds' worth of cat at the Richmond Cat Show yesterday (writes a correspondent), but after being snubbed by half dozen beauties who knew their value to the last hair, I came to the conclusion that I would give my own thieving, poaching reprobate of common black cat another chance. For sheer self-possession commend me to the show cat. Boredom, and a vast contempt for all humans, from the judge downward, is written all over him; and I believe that some of them have been so bred out of all cat sense that they would not know what to do with a mouse if one was given to them. The common cats, when they are admitted to a corner of a cat show, are much more entertained, and entertaining, than the aristocratic blues and chinchillas, whose toilettes have to be made a dozen times a day.

ANNUAL SHOW ON THE ATHLETIC GROUNDS. THE CAT SHOW. Richmond Herald, 11th July 1914
A show for cats was also held in conjunction with the show, and the pussies in their big marquee had many admirers. They represented the very aristocracy of their presented species, though here and there, there was an exhibit which could not lay claim to any pedigree at all. The local awards were:-
Mrs. S. Young. of Queen's-road, Teddington, placed reserve in silver tabby class (female) with Billy.
Mrs. Simner, of Isleworth. v.h.c. for Buss in tortoiseshells. Buss also received third prize in veterans' class.
Miss Poyer, of Hampton Hill, h.c. for Ruff in neuter class (any colour).
Master G. S. Sedgwick, of Gunnersbury, v.h.c. for litter in class for long-hair litters (blue).
Miss Prime, of Beverley-road, Barnes, third for litter of chinchillas.
Miss M. Wilson, of Sheen-road, Richmond, v.h.c. for Bubbles in variety class.

[RICHMOND SHOW] Middlesex Chronicle, 11th July 1914
At the cat show, held in conjunction with the annual dog show, at Richmond on Tuesday, Mrs. Simner, of Woodland House, the Woodlands, was very highly commended for her “Buss” in the tortoiseshell long-hair, and third veteran, over three years, class; secured a second for “Tiger of Isleworth” in the red, male, tabby, short hair, class; and was very highly commended in the any variety, short hair, cat or kitten, including neuter, class.

Cambridge Mammoth Show, Bank Holiday, Aug 3, 1914. Great Dog and Cat Shows.

THE MAMMOTH SHOW Cambridge Independent Press, 31st July 1914
“Bigger than ever.” This phase applied to the forthcoming Cambridge Mammoth Show does not belie the facts . . . Any interesting exhibit, but not in competition, will be the wild fishing leopard cat, caught in the jungle in Burmah. This animal is kindly loaned by Mr Scott Wilson, who imported i. This cat is said to be the only specimen of its kind in England.

CAMBRIDGE MAMMOTH SHOW Cambridge Independent Press, 7th August 1914
Cats. Judge: Mr T.B. Mason. Cars are always a noted feature in connection with this exhibition. The entry this year, though small, was a little in excess of what it has been for several years past. About thirty cats were shown, most being entered for several classes. The quality was of exceptionally high merit. The adults, especially the long-hairs, were a very fine lot, but owing to the summer season were very much out of coat. The short-hairs had not suffered like the long-hairs in this respect, and were very excellent exhibits. It is worthy of special remark that a kitten, a short-hair orange-tabby kitten, won the silver challenge cup for the best exhibit in the Show, the owner being Mrs F.W. Western, of Sandy. Mrs Western won many other prizes. It appears it is no good wanting show cats; Mrs Western has got them all. The judge, Mr Mason, said the champion was one of the best orange-tabby kittens he had ever seen. The colour was an orange ground, coloured with markings, including those on face, head, legs, four rings round the breast, and rings round the tail, and the eyes were rich, deep-coloured orange, the best and deepest eyes, the judge declared, he had ever seen.
Long-hair adult – 1 and 3, Mrs F.W. Western, Sandy; 2, Mrs P. Williams, Shrewsbury
Long-hair kitten, under 6 months – 1 and 3, Mrs F.W. Western; 2, Miss J.M. Disher, new Barnet.
Long-hair novice, any age – 1, Mrs P. Williams; 2, Mrs F.W. Western; 3, mrs Stephen, Barnet.
Short-hair adult – 1 and 3, Mrs Carew-Cox, Croydon; 2, Mrs F.W. Western.
Short-hair kitten – 1, Mrs F.W. Western; 2, Dr A. Aylon, Halesworth.

1914 GRAND PATRIOTIC CAT SHOW (LONDON)

[GRAND PATRIOTIC CAT SHOW] AN APPEAL TO CAT LOVERS. Hampstead News, 29th October 1914
The hon. treasurer of the coming Patriotic Cat Shaw writes:-
Will those of your readers who are lovers of animals help us in our efforts to make the Grand Patriotic Cat Show, which is to be held at the Wellington Hall, 1 Finchley-road, on Thursday. November 5th, a success. All the profits of the Show are to be devoted to the Red Cross Society and the St. John's Ambulance Association, and it is hoped that cat lovers in all parts of the country will unite to make the show one of the largest and most successful that has ever been held. All the most beautiful specimens of the feline race, from all parts of England, Scotland, and Ireland will meet at the Wellington Hall on Nov. 5th to compete for the much-coveted championships and honours of Catdom. Every kind and variety of cat will be represented, from the dear old fireside English tabby to the handsome red, white, or blue Persians; the dainty Chinchilla, with his deep emerald green eyes; the regal Siamese (one of the quaintest and most attractive in disposition of all his kind), the Abyssinian. the Manx, and every other type, colour and variety of cat will be amongst the number. Many of the prize-winning cats and kittens will be sold for the benefit of the War Funds, and those in search of a beautiful kitten as a pet, or to give away as a Christmas present, will do well to avail themselves of this opportunity of getting what they want, and at the same time of helping the noble work which the Red Cross Society and the St. John's Ambulance Association are doing for our troops. We earnestly appeal to all cat lovers to help us. Tickets of admission. 1/- each, may be obtained from Mrs. New, 41 St. John's Wood Park.

[GRAND PATRIOTIC CAT SHOW] Hampstead News, 12th November 1914
Wellington Hall, Finchley-road, presented a unique sight on Thursday, when the grand patriotic cat show was held. There were 580 entries, and the cats were most comfortably housed in pens, though it was evident that many of them resented being penned up. But they were objects of admiration, and those of them who responded to the visitors' coaxing received a great deal of petting. The cats, which came from all parts of England, Ireland, and Scotland, and not only included every variety, but the most beautiful specimens of the feline race.

Mrs. Stephen (hon. treasurer), of Hyver Hall, Barnet, originated the show, not only in aid of the Funds, but also to give an opportunity for breeders to transact business, the war having adversely affected the trade.. She herself exhibited a number of cats which included “blues" and “chinchillas,” the former were most beautiful specimens of the breed and possessed peculiarly beautiful eyes. The special prize for the “Best in Show” was won by Master Currie's beautiful white queen “Minley White Violet',” the same cat carrying off the silver inkstand offered by Lady Miller for the Best Novice. Mrs. New (of St. John's Wood-park) won the first prize and championship in chinchilla (female) cats, with a very fine queen shown in a perfect coat and condition. Among the most successful exhibitors were the Hon. Mrs. Clive Behrens, Mrs. Sinkins, Mrs. Slingsby, Mrs. Western, Miss Clements, Miss Fisher, and Mrs. Bennet.

Unfortunately, very few of the cats or kittens were sold, although many of the prize winners were offered at very tempting prices. The show was crowded with visitors, and though it is impossible at this early date, owing to outstanding accounts, to mention the figures, it is hoped that a substantial sum will be handed over to the Red Cross Society. The gate money alone amounted to over £26.

Mrs. Millar acted as hon. secretary, and gave valuable assistance in organizing the show, and Messrs. T. B. Mason, Watson, and Norris acted as judges. Anyone wishing to buy a really first-class cat or kitten at a merely nominal price, and will write to Mrs. Stephen, Hyver Hall, Barnet, she will put them into communication with breeders and owners of prize cats and kittens.

1914 – CANCELLATION OF MANY SHOWS

By Autumn 1914, Agricultural and Horticultural Shows originally planned for Autumn 1914 were being abandoned owing to the “crisis in Europe.” Many Agricultural, Horticultural, Kennel and Fanciers’ Societies announced that there would be no annual show in 1915 because of the war. Railways could not guarantee that cats (and other small livestock) would be delivered to the show on time because trains were requisitioned to transport troops and supplies, and owners could not risk their animals sitting in baskets on station platforms and then not reaching their destination in time for a show (or at all). Show organisers (many of whom had gained their organisational skills through army life) were called up for military service, horses were requisitioned for war, there was a shortage of horseboxes/livestock trailers (requisitioned to transport horses to the channel ports) which prevented owners from entering agricultural shows. It was believed that the war would be over in 1915, hence the societies and clubs wrote in the press that they had hoped to resume their annual shows in 1916, but owing to the difficulty of collecting members’ subscriptions during 1915 they did not anticipate resuming shows until 1917.
