[MELBOURNE] CAT SHOW - The Hamilton Spectator, August 13th, 1872.
We notice, by the Sporting Era, that it is proposed to hold a Cat Show in Melbourne, early in October next, when a solid silver collar, with suitable inscription, will be awarded to every winner.

THE POULTRY SHOW – The Sydney Morning Herald, 22nd October, 1879
[. . .] The cat show was a failure. Only four members of the species were exhibited. They were judged and prizes were awarded, but as the cats were not numbered, it is impossible to give the names of the owners of the prize winners.

CAT SHOW, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA Aberdeen Press and Journal, 13th November 1886
The annual exhibition of the National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland was held Brisbane on the 17th August and three following days, and considering the severe and protracted drought from which the colony has suffered (now happily broken up), was a great success. The attendance of visitors to the show grounds was, for the population, immense, the number that passed through the turnstiles the opening day having been over 30,000. [. . .] It may interest some of your readers to know that [. . .] novelty here was a cat show, for which there were forty-one entries.

GRAND CAT SHOW- The Age (Melbourne), 29th February, 1892.
A novelty in the form of attraction for the public is announced to take place in the Exhibition Building on the 24th, 26th and 26th March, when a Grand Cat Show is to be held.

CAT SHOW - The Sydney Morning Herald, 19th September, 1899
A meeting of ladies and gentlemen interested in the forthcoming cat show, which is to he hold in the concert-hall of the Victoria markets was held at the office, 37 Park-street, on Saturday evening. The secretary reported that over 100 prizes had been donated by leading city firms.

CAT SHOW - CAT SHOW – The Sydney Morning Herald, 30th September, 1899
A cat show will be opened to-day in the Concert Hall, Queen Victoria markets. Elaborate preparations have been made to display to the best advantage the large number of entries that have been received. The display is certain to be an attractive one, and the public will be able to note the names of the various exhibits and their owners by means of an elaborate catalogue that has been prepared.

THE CAT SHOW – The Sydney Morning Herald, 2nd October, 1899
A cat show in aid of the Civil Ambulance and Transport Brigade was opened on Saturday in the concert-hall of the Victoria Markets, There were over 200 entries from all parts of the country, which created a large amount of interest. All sorts and conditions of cats were shown, from a waif found in Hyde Park to the domestic aristocratic Persian cat of rare value. These costly specimens were in great variety — blue, silver, black, and brown; and as a thoroughly representative exhibition the show was a decided success. The promoters were Mr. and Mrs. Keep, and it is hoped that the interest awakened in the exhibition will lead to the formation of a cat club among fanciers of this universal domestic pet. The exhibits were well staged, and with the aid of an instructive catalogue many visitors, no doubt, learned much of interest concerning the feline race. The judging was performed by Dr. Hughes, Messrs, F. Albert and E. Butcher.

The prize for the favourite cat, decided by the vote of the visitors, was awarded Mrs. Kemp’s Silver Queen with 57 votes, Mrs. King’s Lorna with 49 being second. The holder of 374 won the Persian kitten.

CAT SHOW - The Sydney Morning Herald, 4th October, 1899
In regard to the prize list in connection with the cat show held on Saturday, it appears that after the judges had made their awards, which wore copied for publication, certain cats were discovered to have been awarded prizes which had been entered in wrong classes. They were subsequently disqualified and the tickets rearranged. Mr. Keep is preparing a revised prize list for official. Miss M. Bonnett’s cat nhould have been credited with first prize, and Mr. Possick’s second among the while gelded cats. In silver tabby (gelded) Mme. Cortesi’s "Mick" and Mrs. R. Littlejohn’s "Moppits” were equal firsts.

The owner of one of the cats which took a first prize at the cat show was Mrs. G. E. Tissington.

The second annual Cat Show to be held in the Concert Hal1 of the Victoria Markets on Wednesday, July 4. Entries have beenn received from all parts of the country. The last day for receiving entries will be Monday next.

LADIES’ POULTRY [AND CAT] SHOW - Sydney Morning Herald, 5th July, 1909
The Masonic Hall, Castlereagh-street, presented a lively appearance on Saturday evening. The attraction being the ladles’ poultry, cage bird, and cat show. The hall was thronged with people, the attendance being up to the "old days” of poultry shows, when these fixtures were held at the Exhibition Building. It was easily a record "gate" for the poultry show season. The cats were judged on 8aturday, and a few additional special prizes were also decided.

CAT SHOW AWARDS - The Age (Melbourne), 14 August, 1918
An error crept into the list of prize-winners of the recent cat show. A reference to the official record shows a that the black Persian cat, Glen, belonging to Mrs. A. Kennedy, of 69 Graham-street, Albert Park, won the first prize, the challenge prize and the challenge ribbon awards in the open clas at the show.

DOG AND CAT SHOW – The Sydney Morning Herald, 8th October, 1923
The Breeders and Fanciers’ Canine Society of New South Wales held its seventh annual championship dog and cat show at the R.A.S. Grounds on Saturday. A good entry was received. [. . .] Cats were a fine lot.

The championship show of the clubs catering for the Pom, Peke, Pug and Poodle dogs and Persian cats held the third championship show at Wirths' Park on Saturday. [. . .] In the cat section blue Persians were the strongest, altogether 19 of these being penned. Chinchillas numbered 4, shaded silvers 14, silver tabbies 11, smokes, brown tabbies 4, whites 6, and orange or cream 3. The chief prize winners were:—

CAT SHOW – The Sydney Morning Herald, 14th June, 1926
The Cat Fanciers Association of New South Wales held a championship show of registered stock at the Masonic Hall, Dulwich Hill, on Saturday. There was a record entry.
Included In the many colours and varieties were Siamese cats. The trophy for the best cat in the show was awarded to Mrs. M. Charlesworth’s fine Chinchilla male, Master Paul. The second prize went to Mrs. A. J. Howarth’s white male, White Peter, shown in grand condition and coat.

DOG AND CAT SHOW AT GEELONG – The Age, 19th July, 1926
Geelong, Sunday. — Geelong Poultry and Kennel Club on Saturday conducted a cat show and dog parade, which attracted entries from the metropolitan suburbs, Ballarat and Colac. The exhibits were generally of a superior type, and that fact was commented on by Mr. L. A. Latchford after he had completed his task as judge. His awards were:—

Championship Awards.
Ballarat, Saturday. Record success attended the annual champion show of dogs and cats promoted by Ballarat and District Kennel Club, which was concluded today. In entries and standard of exhibits the show was stated by the judge, Mr. L. A. Latchford, of Melbourne, to have exceeded in certain respects the V.P. and K.C. show. [. . .]

Cat Section: Although the entries were not excessively large, the quality was excellent. The Marks Cup for the best cat in the show was awarded to Mrs. E. Drew’s champion female Chinchilla Persian Milara Fairy, to which was also awarded the prize for best female in show. The prize for best male went to Miss E. Crocker’s shaded silver Persian Felix, and for the best neuter to Miss L. Lythgo’a Dupert. The prize list was as follows:—

CAT SHOW – The Sydney Morning Herald, 15th November, 1926
The Cat Fanciers’ Association of New South Wales held its third annual exhibition on Saturday in the Anzac Memorial Hall, Mosman, when a large entry was displayed. Many splendid specimens were included in the exhibits. The silver cup for best Chinchilla kitten under nine months went to Mrs. G.W. Wallace. The silver cup for best tabby kitten wan awarded to Mrs. F. S. Lonsdale. The list of special prizes was as follows:-

CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW, CAT AWARDS - The Age (Melbourne), 8th August, 1927
The combined championship show of the Foots-cray and Victorian Bull Dog Club was continued on Saturday at Wirths’, Olympia. About 50 Persian cats were judged, the best support coming in blues. First prizes went to Mrs. B.V. Coulsell, Mrs. M.E. Vroland and Mrs. M.J. Nunn. For Chinchillas, to Mrs. H.J. Brown, Mrs. Moog and Mrs. Williams; for silver tabbies to Mrs. Bullard; for blacks to Mrs H. Greenhill, Mrs. A. Geelong, Sunday. The Geelong Poultry And Kennel Society held a successful cat show and dog parade on Saturday. Mr. A. Anderson judged the dogs, and Mr. P.A. Maude adjudicated in the section for cats. The champion ribbon for the best male cat or kitten was awarded to Mrs. E. Drew’s Milara Cathay Val, and the champion ribbon for best female cat or kitten to Mrs. E. Drew’s Milara Fairy. PERSIAN CAT SHOW – The Age (Melbourne), 18 August 1927
The championship ahow of Persian cats arranged by the Commonwealth Club was held in the Protestant Hall yesterday. Mr. G. Woodward judged all classes. He awarded the trophy for the best cat to Mrs. B. V. Coulsell’s Cathay Boy, which also won for best male. The trophy for best female went to Mrs. E. Drew’s chinchilla Ch. Milara Fairy, and for best female kitten to Mrs. Nunn’s Blue Belle of Worboys.

First prizes were also won in the blue classes by Mrs. Vroland. Mrs. F. Gill and Miss Canning; in chinchillas by Mrs. Knell, Mrs. Esler, Mrs. Drew, Mrs. H.J. DOG AND CAT SHOW – The Age, 18th June, 1928
Geelong, Sunday. The Geelong Poultry and Kennel Club conducted a dog and cat ahow yesterday afternoon. It was regarded as the most successful show of the kind held in Geelong. W. Peck judged the dogs, and Mr. P. Maude adjudicated in the cat section. [. . .] In the cat section winners of blue ribbons were: Miss Costain (Persian male), Mrs. M. Yates (female), Mrs. H. J. Brown (male kitten), Mrs. M. Yates (female kitten), and Mrs. G. Mason (best short-haired cat in the show). The champion cup was won by Mrs. May Yates with her Blue Persian female Suzette. Mrs. P.E. CAT SHOW. SPLENDID DISPLAY – The Sydney Morning Herald, 4th April, 1929
Cats had the Royal Show practically to themselves yesterday. Exhibitors made a splendid response, and there is no doubt that but for the wet weather the dog pavilion, where the show was held, would have boon a centre of attraction. As it was, the cats were viewed by many people. The Persians, especially, were the objects of admiration. Lazily displaying their long silken coats that invited caressing strokes, owners jealously guarded their pets, and had to keep a watchful eye on venturesome little boys and girls, and women, too, whose first impulse was to gather them up in their arms and nurse them.

For the first time Siamese cats were exhibited this year. They are about the same size as the ordinary cat, but have a puma- like conformation, with remarkable colour markings, a light grey with very dark grey points that have a remarkable regularity.

The Judge (Mr. F. W. Pearce) expressed pleasure at the high standard maintained by the exhibitors, and in some cases had difficulty in deciding the final placings. Following are the awards:—

KITTEN PARADE – The Sydney Morning Herald, 16th September 1929
Fillet of fish, a small portion of baked rabbit, followed by a modest helping of minced steak are to a pedigree cat mere items of wearying monotony in the dally menu. Such at any rate was the information vouchsafed by several members of the Australian Cat Club of New South Wales at the anniversary parade of Persian kittens held at South Kensington on Saturday afternoon.

The parade, which was held at the resi¬dence of the honorary secretary, Mrs. E. M. Hopewell, included some sixty pedigree kit¬tens of the Persian variety. There were blue cats, with copper coloured eyes, shaded silver cats, with green eyes, and white cats with golden eyes. Carefully combed and re-combed, their long coats were of silky smoothness and sheen. But they were quite blase, these cats. Most of them slept through¬out the afternoon.

The exhibits were regarded by the Judge as remarkably fine. With their broad heads, stubby bodies, and short medium tails, they were stated to be splendid specimens of the Persian variety. Following the parade, which marked the third anniversary of the Australian Cat Club, members were entertained at afternoon tea by Mrs. Hopewell.

PERSIAN CAT SHOW – Sydney Morning Herald, 2nd December, 1929.
There was a Persian cat show on Saturday at the Paddington Town Hall, the judges being Mrs. M. Char1eworth (self colours), Mrs. E. M. Hopewell (mixed colour»). The trophy for best cat in the show was won by Mrs. H. D. Cochrane's "White Foam of Gaybrook.” This exhibitor also secured the trophy for best female cat with "Pearl of Runnymede.” The trophy for runner-up to winner of best cat went to Mrs. M. West's "Black Prince.” The cup for best kitten went to Mrs. O. Cole-Clarke’s "Blue Aloha of Fax." Other cup winners were:— Mrs. J. Engledor, V. Sharpe, Mrs. H. E. Basnett, Mrs. O. The championship Persian cat show of the Australian Cat Club, at the Paddington Town Hall, was one of the largest collection of high-class Persians seen to the State, over 420 entries being received. Competition was keen, especially in the young stock classes. The judges were Mrs. L. G. Forrest, Mrs. M.

The South Suburban Pomeranian, Pekingese and Persian Cat Club held its fifth championship show at the Prahran town hall yesterday. SHOW OF KITTENS – The Age, 4th December, 1930
The Australian Cat Club held a show of kittens yesterday at the Manchester Unity Hall, Swanston-street. About 80 Persian kittens were judged by Mr. L. Holland. The club's gold medal for best kitten was awarded to Miss C. Muster’s Chinchilla male Ruffy, and the trophy for best of the opposite sex went to Mrs. A. E. Vincent's blue female Nanette, of Balwyn.

FANCIERS' ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIP CAT SHOW – The Sydney Morning Herald, 20th June, 1932
The Cat Fanciers' Association of New 8outh Wales held its annual championship show at the Marrickville Town Hall on Saturday. There were more than 500 entries. The judges were Miss Lonsdale and Mr. F. W. Pearce.

The President’s Cup, for the best exhibit In the show, was won by Mrs. P. Hitching’s red tabby male, Watmer (Imp.). PERSIAN CATS COMPETE. BLUES WERE THE BEST. - The Age (Melbourne), 21 September, 1932
Even the luxury Persian cats helped yesterday to add interest to the record show. The entries were well in advance of those of last year, although it was left to the popular blues to "pull their full weight.” Other colors were numerically weak, and the quality was not up to the standard of the blues.

There were only four Royal Siamese entered, but for the first time at any cat show in the State the trophy for best exhibit was gained by one of these, Ch. Prince Roofee, and not a Persian. A Siamese is a short-haired cat, his color being the palest of fawns, with seal-brown points. The Persians did not seem to mind the slight to the breed.

All Persian cats should look alike in make and shape, varying only in color of fur and eyes, to mark the difference in name. Blue Persians were the best collection, and although at this time of the year the longhaired cats are losing coat and self-colors appear rusty, there were some typical cats competing. One that impressed was Don, a massive animal, with a wonderful head and deep orange eyes. He is even in color, with plenty of coat. He did not win a place in the open class. The challenge winner for males, Bimbo of Malonga, fails in expression and is plain in head. He was in fine bloom, and has good eyes. The females were not as good as the males. The challenge winner, Medica of Canowindra is of good type, but she was out of coat, and is small.

Dog and cat shows were judged at the R.A.S. Showground yesterday. [. . .] Mr Harry H. Wynne, secretary of the Cat Fanciers Association of N.S.W., said yesterday’s show was the "best for years”. SIAMESE CAT SHOW – The Age (Melbourne), 27th June, 1952
Miss Heather Menzies will open the third championship show arranged by the Siamese Cat Club of Australia in the Lower Melbourne Town Hall, at 2.30 p.m., tomorrow. More than 130 feline beauties will be on parade. The show will feature all breeds of cats — seal-point Siamese, blue-point Siamese, Chinchillas, blue-eyed whites, Persians and domestic cats. Of special interest will be the three chocolate-point Siamese. Proceeds from the show, which will be open to the public from noon until 8 p.m., will go to the Red Cross Society.

CAT SHOW – The Age, 16th May, 1953
The popularity of cats, we are told, is increasing in leaps and bounds. The Melbourne cat show, for example, has fallen on its feet. Our authority for this is the secretary of the Melbourne Cat Club (Mr. George Dyke), who organised the first cat show for charity in 1949. He has seen attendance increase from a few hundreds to 5000 and the number of exhibits treble to reach 150 last year.

This year the show, arranged In conjunction with the club's auxiliary at the Children’s Hospital, orthopaedic section, will be held at the Town Hall on May 30. The value of the exhibits is expected to be between £2000 and £2500.

CATS ON CUSHIONS HAD MILKLESS DAY – The Age, 1st June, 1953
Hundreds of people jostled in a queue at the Lower Town Hall on Saturday to see 170 sleepy cats reclining on plush cushions. For ten hours without a meal the cats were scrutinised. They faced the ordeal in the twenty-first Melbourne cat show with indifference. Three judges took four hours to pick the winners.

Feeding was forbidden but one Siamese prize-winner was slipped a plate of rabbits’ meat. The only cat meowing in the hall was in a cage alongside. Most of the 3200 spectators got only a brief glimpse of the champions. They were kept moving past the gilded cages at the rate of 400 every hour.

There were 104 Persian cats displayed. They slept and dozed curled up on their green cushions and felt mats. In a cage furnished with pink velvet and golden bells lay a triple-prize-winner, Hillcrest Ali Baba. He is an eight-months-old green-eyed Chinchilla. His owner, Mrs. L. Suffield, said she fed him on steak, rabbit and fish and once a week, liver. Pink lame decorated his mother, Hillcrest Collette’s cage. The Siamese cats had green and pink pom pons hanging in their cages.

One exhibitor owns 11 cats which cost £3 a week to keep. A blue Persian cross-bred kitten was sold for 30 shillings.

Other main prize-winners were: Montrose Cup, best Persian: Mrs. Geo. Dyke’s cream Champion Solo (Imp). Club Trophy, best Siamese: Mrs. M. Fawcett’s Donvale Matika. Westwood Cattery trophy: Mr. T. Nasher’s Westwood Shah.

CAT SHOW - The Age, 4th July, 1953
Aristocrats of the cat world from all over Victoria and other States will be on show in the Lower Melboourne Town Hall on Saturday, July 11, from noon to 8 p.m., when the Siamese Cat Club holds its annual Siamese cat show in aid of Red Cross funds. The show is being managed by Lieut.-Col. S. T. V. Cole, who is a famous breeder of royal Siamese cats. This will be the largest cat show yet held in Melbourne (it is not limited to Siamese cats, but household pots are welcome as entrants, too), and 90 exhibitors have entered 173 cats.

Blue and chocolate seal-point Siamese, Chinchillas and Persians will be on display, with the domestic cat and kitten. Tickets are 2 shillings for adults, and 1 shilling for children.

170 ARISTOCRATIC CATS WERE BORED – The Age, 9th November, 1953
One hundred and seventy of Australia’s most aristocratic cats which took part in the southern hemisphere's biggest cat show on Saturday stared in lazy boredom at the hundreds of people who came to see them. Valued at more than £4000, they were entrants in the annual show of the Siamese Cat Club of Australia, at Melbourne Town Hall.

For cat lovers, it was the event of the year. For the cats, it was just plain boring. Some prowled languidly round their cages, a few purred resentfully, many cast looks of supreme disdain or indifference at the spectators. Most just slept unashamedly throughout the proceedings.

An American offer of more than £400 was received for one of the cats on display, Misselfore Panela, although it was still recovering from a serious operation. The cat made world headlines recently when it swallowed a needle, came successfully through a major operation, and then gave birth without complications to a litter of seven kittens.

The secretary of the club (Mr. D. J. C. Chandler) said the Australian Siamese had a high standing in the world, and there was a growing demand from the United States for these Australian-bred cats. Each cat sent to America was insured for to £85 through Lloyd’s of London.

The Siamese was one of the world’s most ferocious cats, and was capable of killing an Airedale dog. Originally they were palace watchdogs in Siam, where they attacked marauders.

An outsize dog-hating Siamese cat helped wardens guard 200 pedigree and household entrants at an Australian Cat Society exhibition in Sydney Some cat had chintz curtains and tinselled signs. Cats sat on plush velvet or satin cushions. Some had beauty treatment – combing, powdering and perfuming. Prizes went to: " Miss Glamour Puss 1954,'' the prettiest cat, and to "Johnny of the Rooftops," the noisiest cat.

CAT SHOW FOR RED CROSS - The Age (Melbourne), 19 May, 1954
Cats valued by their owners at more than £2000 will be on view at the annual championship show of Siamese cats In the lower Town Hall on Saturday. A record number of 194 entries has been received for the show, which will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Proceeds are for the Red Cross. It will be opened by Miss Marie Collier at 3.30 p.m.

PUSS ON PARADE AIDED SPASTICS – The Age, 23rd May, 1955
Cats of every possible type, most of them in cages with rugs and curtains matching in color of their eyes, were on show in the lower Melbourne Town Hall on Saturday. It was the 23rd annual championship cat and kitten show held by the Melbourne Cat Club.

Proceeds of the show went to the Spastic Children’s Society and four young members of the Dwinkle Club for the Spastics —Jane Casson, Pru and Margaret Whitehead and Rowena Buchanan, dressed in colorful Dwinkle costumes — were selling catalogues to help with funds.

Most of the cats shown had been bred by Melbourne women and three women were judging. They were Miss G. Dennis and Mrs. W. R. Matheson, well-known Melbourne cat show judges, and Mrs. A. Vize, who arrived from England five weeks ago, and is now living in Sydney. Mrs. Vize is an international judge having judged in England, on the Continent, in the United States, Canada and South Africa.

Sleeping soundly in their cage with its warm blue blanket, and quite unperturbed by the crowds of women and children around them, were four cream Persian kittens who had each won prizes. Keeping an eye on them were Louise and Marigold Baker whose mother, Mrs. H. B. Baker, of South Yarra, had bred and entered them.

The four kittens, who were entered singly, as pairs and as a litter, and who were, to the untrained eye, indistinguishable from each other, had won between them prizes for the best male and best female Persian kittens in the show, first prizes for the best male and female Persian kittens under four months, a second prize and nine special certificates Mrs. Baker started a new strain from their mother — a champion imported cream Persian — with which she has previously won prizes in England but this is her first and very successful Australian-born litter

Mrs. R. Price, of Preston, who has been breeding Persians for 25 years, entered an imported cat which won awards as the best Persian and best male cat in the show. She was also successful with a blue female Persian and pair of blue Persian kittens. In a cage with green velvet decor — to match his magnificent eyes — was Mrs. T. O’Mara’s entry - imported champion Hillcrcst Merry Imp, judged the best exhibit and bred by her sister-in-law. Mrs. L. Suffield.

Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Hawkes, of Glen Iris, who both breed cats (helped by their small daughter Linda who loves to pet them) entered four Chinchilla Persians. They brought a champion cat from England a few years ago, whose daughter was judged the best female cat in the show on Saturday.

Miss B. Saker, of Moonea Ponds, won prizes for both the best Siamese cat in the show and the best Siamese kitten. The kitten is one of the cat’s first litter. To make it a family affair Miss Saker had also entered the kitten’s father.

Mrs. George Dyke, of East Ivanhoe, whose husband was show manager won a prize for the best blue kitten. Mrs. Dyke, who has been breeding blues, blue creams and creams for the past 11 years was busy with the 12 cats she entered in the show.

With the first kitten she has bred. Miss E. Boyd, of Thornbury, was awarded first for the best blue cream kitten. Another cat she owns won first prize in the shaded silver section in the long-haired group.

CAT SHOW, FETE AT TOWN HALL - Sydney Morning Herald, 6th June, 1955.
The Federal Cat Club of Australasia will stage its 25th annual championship cat show in the Sydney Town Hall basement next Friday. It will donate the proceeds of the show to the Sub-normal Children’s Welfare Association. The association will stage a fete, with chocolate wheels, stalls, and raffles, at the show. The fete will take place from 9.30 a.m. until 8.30 p.m., and the inspection of cats from 11 until 8.

SEVEN "FIRSTS" – The Age, 7th November, 1955
A proud winner at the Siamese Cat Show in the Lower Melbourne Town Hall on Saturday was Mrs. B. Price, who won seven "firsts” — five of them for her champion long-haired kitten.
Mrs. Price said she had been breeding cats for 25 years, and has 12 at home at present. "But they’re just a hobby, and fun to look after,” she said. She has a crystal cabinet with the top full of trophy cups her cats have won, and has collected more than 100 prizes for them.

The best long-haired cat prize was won by Mrs. T. Thompson, with a cat bred by Mrs. Price. Mrs. Thompson has been showing cats only this year. "People who love cats want to keep one. So they might as well have the best, and they make an interesting hobby,” Mrs. Thompson said.

Rehka Devi Rinda won the best opposite sex Siamese cat award for Mr. R. Corrie. His mother, who showed the cat with him, looks after their five adult cats and six kittens. "Looking after” them includes keeping them warm in winter with hot water bottles, feeding them twice a day, and cleaning their living quarters — a room 14 feet by 10 feet, with lined, insulated roof, and a "run” 14 feet by 18 feet.

One of the most excited exhibitors when the prizes were being distributed, was nine-year-old Judith Ann Sincott, who won three special prizes and a first for Chong of Arden, the best Siamese neuter cat at the show. Judith Ann. who has the cat as a pet, and showed him for the first time, feeds him on meat and a beaten egg every afternoon after school, and generally looks after him. Her brother John (who owns a black pure-bred Persian), and her mother, Mrs. R. Sincott, were with Judith Ann yesterday.

AMERICAN JUDGES CATS - The Sydney Morning Herald, 12th April, 1979
Cat exhibiting had developed along different lines in Australia than in the United States, a cat judge at the Royal Easter Show, Mrs Jeanie McPhee, of Houston, Texas, said yesterday. Some of the colours developed in Australia were unique and it had been interesting to see this and the different standards which applied here, she said. Mrs McPhee said she had done a lot of reading about Australian cat judging standards before the Show. One of the differences between judging here and the US was that neither the public nor the cat owners were allowed to watch while judging was in progress, she said.

PUSSIES ON PARADE – the Age, 10th July, 1981
Cat shows are not just for pampered pedigree cats. The family pet has its own domestic class and can compete for ribbons, trophies and glory like any aristocratic Abyssinian. If you are interested in putting pussy through its paces, next month's Australian Cat Club Championship Show might be a good place to start. Domestic cats are jdged on cleanliness, attractiveness, presentation and temperament, with the emphasis on the last.

Preparation for a cat show takes place every day of a cat’s life, according to Beryl Chandler who has been a cat judge and breeder for 40 years. Good diet, grooming and handling are essential if a cat is to look its best on the day. She advises a varied diet that's a mixture of dried, tinned and fresh food. Grooming for long-haired cats should be done with a bristle brush, not a comb or a nylon brush, which will break the hair Five minutes daily is ample. Short-haired cats can be hand groomed by stroking and modelling the fur until it is sleek. If you shampoo your cat (which should be done as little as possible) never wash the cat less than three days before a show; the fur must be allowed time to settle.

On the day of the show, all cats must be examined by the show vet to make sure they are in good health. Then they can go to their cages. These are generally decorated with drapes, which must be white. You can hire these or make your own.

The Australian Cat Club's Championship Show takes place on 16 August at Dandenong High School. One of the highlights will be the presence of a well-known American judge, Barbara St Georges.
