Vol 40 reflects the economic problems in Britain in 1970. That year there were strikes, a 3 day working week and power cuts (I remember night lights, candles and mum planning how best to use the cooker). The catalogue has fewer pages and the full-size A4 colour pages alternate with half-width pages on cheaper paper and without colour printing (the images below show this). Although the actual printing was done in Germany, the catalogue reflects the poor state of the £ sterling at the time and how Readicut did not waste space on glossy coloured pages, but restricting text to the narrow inserts.
