Brighter Dawn
Copyright 1997, S Hartwell

Written as lyrics for a friend's band

Born in the depths of a howling night,
Of a pale white moon and cold starlight,
Daybreak came with a blazing morn,
Left me searching for the brighter dawn.

Drawn to fire like a moth to a flame,
Needing the heat of a whole new game,
Heat of a candle and heat of the sun,
Couldn't compete with heat of the gun.

Tried all the drugs and tried all the pills,
Tried fire-water to keep out the chill,
Flame of darkness couldn't be forsworn,
Left me searching for the brighter dawn.

Went into the flame and felt it singe,
Lawmen came and they clipped my wings,
From a cell like a dark womb got reborn,
Still in search of a brighter dawn.

Stared at the sun till it burnt my eyes,
Looking into a new sunrise,
Ran in the night like a flaming torch,
Till those around me began to scorch.

From the cradle of dark to the dark of the grave,
Spent my life in the hottest flames,
Heat of a candle and heat of the sun,
Couldn't compete with the heat of a gun.

WINGS OF FIRE
(This was a different version of the one above)

I'm just a player in a dangerous game,
A night moth in search of a brighter flame,
Standing in the shadows, see the day grow light,
Seems I'm still looking for a flame more bright,
Hour by hour, I see dreams turn sour,
Searching like a bee for a sweeter flower.

From bud to blossom where the honey drips sweet,
Still can't find the nectar that's sweetest to eat,
Can't find what I need from the flowers I find,
Still searching for sweetness till it sours my mind,
Rise up to the light, finding only the dark,
Looking for fire, seeing only the spark.

Like the moth to the candle, finding death in love,
Found me an inferno but it wasn't enough,
So I rose up to the sun where the hot fires swell,
Tempered by the flames in the forge of hell,
I flew into the storm where the lightning flashes,
And fell from grace to earth with my wings in ashes.

When you hear my voice, when you hear my name,
Think of the moth, the consuming candle-flame,
The one who bet and lost in a dangerous game,
Burned to ashes by a bright white flame.

Dancing to a Different Drum
Copyright 1997, S Hartwell

Written as lyrics for a friend.

Baby I’ve got you beside me,
Though I know that it’s only one night,
You’ll be gone when the bright day is breaking,
But all through the dark night you’re mine.

We’re riding on the tail of a comet,
We’re speeding like a bullet from a gun,
And I know that when the sun cries morning,
You’ll be dancing to a different drum.

I can feel our hearts beating together,
Your head lies so warm on my chest,
Your hair smells so sweet in the still night,
Let’s make the most of this darkness.

We’re riding on the tail of a comet,
And I’m rising above like the sun,
I know that when daytime comes dawning,
You’ll be dancing to a different drum.

Cresting like a wave on the ocean,
Breaking like the sea on the shore,
I can tell by the way you cling tight to me baby,
That you’ve never felt like this before!

We’re riding on the tail of a comet,
We’re speeding like a bullet from a gun,
From now until the bright sun brings morning,
We’ll be dancing to a different drum!

Cresting like a wave on the ocean,
I’m rising above like the sun,
Can’t we keep the new day from dawning,
While we’re dancing to a different drum ...

I know that when the daybreak comes calling,
You’ll be dancing to a different drum.

FALSE PROMISES
Copyright 1997, S Hartwell

(Written with scope for lots of guitar and minimum vocals)

Don’t make your false promises,
I’ve heard them all before,
Just pack up your bags ,
And walk out through the door.

Don’t come back to me asking,
If I’ll take you back in,
When you find out that life,
Doesn’t work out with him.

Don’t come back here expecting,
To make a new start,
Or go making empty promises
That just break my heart.

BITTERSWEET
Copyright 1997, S Hartwell

If I’d known then what I know now,
Would I still have done the same -
Made the same mistakes for the same sweet thrills,
For the bittersweet memories, bittersweet pain?

Would I still be caught, trapped fast in this web,
Spun by the spider of love’s deceit,
Trapped here with you, wrapped up like a fly,
In the silk lies of bittersweet?

If my heart was still innocent and whole,
Would I still sell myself so cheap,
Give away my soul for so small a gain,
For bittersweet memories and bittersweet pain?

If I’d known then all the things I know now,
Today I might still be free,
Instead of trapped by my past mistakes,
So bitter, to remember the sweet.

CHANGING ME
Copyright 1983, 1997 S Hartwell

Written and arranged for friend's band

(Whispered)
Footsteps in the sands of time,
Tracks along an empty beach,
Towards a fate which is not mine,
A destiny so out of reach ...
(End whisper)

All through the years you bled me dry
You changed me till I lived a lie
With every day you made me change
Until you’d bent me out of shape

You came along, you were the one,
The years of change had just begun,
Why can’t you take me as I am,
What I was always meant to be?

All the years of changing me
Are stifling me, are killing me.

They say that love means give and take
I always gave, that was my mistake
You left when I could change no more
But I can never be what I was before.

You came along, you were the one,
The years of change had just begun,
Why can’t you take me as I am,
What I was always meant to be?

All those years of changing me
Have stifled me, have ruined me.

All those years of changing me
(Whispered) Footsteps in the sands of time
Are stifling me, are killing me
(Whispered) Tracks along an empty beach
All those years of changing me
(Whispered) Towards a fate which is not mine
Have stifled me, have ruined me
(Whispered) A destiny so out of reach

(Repeat to fade: )
All those years of changing me
Are stifling me, are killing me
All those years of changing me
Have stifled me, have ruined me ...

FAST WOMAN ROCK
Copyright 1990, 1992, S Hartwell

Written as lyrics for a friend's rock band

She’s like lightning, never striking twice in
          one place
Just one night then she’s gone, she’s forgotten
          your face,
She’s a fast woman.

Chains of love can’t bind her,
She’ll leaves you all behind her.

Sometimes you wonder if she’ll go under,
          submerged by desire,
Won’t leave a number to the fools drawn like moths
          to her fire,
Just a fast woman.

One night of lust in her arms,
And she’s gone, no memories, no qualms.

Hey boy d’you think you’re a man, can you
          please her?
You promise action, guarantee satisfaction, but
          you tease her.

Young flesh, have you got what it takes,
Are you still game if she names the stakes,

Dare you chance it?’

Make no mistake, you give and she take’s all
          she fancies,
And when you wake, she’s left and she’s hunting
          a man, see
She’s a fast woman

She must satisfy the fire inside her,
Untamed, she needs someone to ride her!

All night, she’ll be moaning for more, but it’s
          pointless,
All night and if you’re groaning ‘no more’ -
          disappoint her

She’ll think you’re a boy and don’t know what it means,
To satisfy when you aren’t what you seem,
Dare you chance her?

If you’re wise, you’ll find paradise temporar’ly
‘Tween her thighs but fool, don’t you try to
          ensnare her,
She’s a fast woman,

For one night, she’s your love steed,
In return satisfy all her needs.

No excuses if you’re not man enough to
          assuage her,
Have you got what it takes? Hot-loined boasters only
          enrage her!
Are your brains in your groin, are you’re full of hot air,
To promise her passion when the action’s not there?
Can you chance it?

She’s like lightning, never striking twice in one place,
Just one night then, she’s gone, won’t remember
          your face,
She’s a fast woman!

SATISFACTION GUARANTEED (...I’VE HEARD THAT ONE BEFORE)
Copyright 1990, S Hartwell

Written as lyrics for a friend's band, incorporated into "Fast Woman Rock"

Hey boy, d’you think you’re a man - can you
          please me?
You promise action, guarantee satisfaction but you
          tease me.
Young flesh have you got what it takes,
Are you still game if I name the stakes?
Dare you chance it?

All night, I’m still moaning for more but it’s pointless,
All night and you’re groaning "no more" - disappointing.
You’re a boy, you don’t know what it means,
To satisfy, you just ain't what you seem.
No excuses, you’re not man enough to assuage me,

You’ve not got what it takes, hot loined boasters
          like you just enrage me,
You’ve got your brains in your groin and you’re
          full of hot air,
You promise me passion but the action’s not there!
You ain't no man.

GOT THE DEVIL ON THE RUN
Copyright 1994, S Hartwell

Written as heavy metal lyrics for a friend's band.

I’m in the hot seat and the terror’s just begun,
My mind’s so twisted, it’s got the devil on the run,
You think I’m joking, but my reign has just begun,
I’ve got the devil on the run.

It don’t need no mastermind to see
I’ll treat the ones I’ve left behind, the way they
          treated me,
The devil’s risen from the fiery throat of Hell,
There’s not enough room here for him and me as well!

You think I’m joking, but my reign has just begun
You think I’m joking, I’ve got the devil on the run,
I’m in the hot seat and the terror’s just begun!
I’ve got the devil on the run.

Don’t look behind you, you just don’t want to know
I’m on your case now and I’m on hell’s
          skull-crowned throne,
Lucifer left it, It was either him or me,
He left Hell’s kitchen when I turned up the heat!

You think I’m joking, but my reign has just begun
You think I’m joking, I’ve got the devil on the run,
I’m in the hot seat and the terror’s just begun!
I’ve got the devil on the run.

It’s getting louder, like the roaring of a crowd,
Sound of my laughter, won’t you stay around?
See all the demons writhing in the flames,
Won’t you join them, I’ve got your soul in chains!

You can’t escape me, I can see into your mind,
You could try running but I’ll be right behind,
To drag you downwards - burn with me in hell,
My mind’s so evil That the devil’s scared as well!

You think I’m joking, but my reign has just begun
You think I’m joking, I’ve got the devil on the run,
I’m in the hot seat and the terror’s just begun!
I’ve got the devil on the run.

I am the master, I’ve got the devil on the run,
And when you join me, I can really have some fun,
Turning the tables, now I’ll be in control,
Watching the hell—fire devouring your soul.

Don’t try resistance, you can’t escape my wrath,
Your sad existence, is enough to make me laugh,
I’ve turned the heat on, and I’m gonna have such fun,
My mind’s so twisted, even the devil’s on the run!

You think I’m joking, but my reign has just begun
You think I’m joking, I’ve got the devil on the run,
Deposed the devil, from his own throne in hell,
There’s not enough room here, for him and me as well!

You think I’m joking, but I’ve got your soul in chains,
I’ll drag you downwards, and burn you in my flames,
I’ve got the devil on the run.

You think I’m joking, but my reign has just begun
I’m in the hot seat and the terror’s just begun!
You think I’m joking, I’ve got the devil on the run,
I’ve got the devil on the run!

VARIETY, THE SPICE OF STRIFE
Copyright 1989, Sarah Hartwell

They’re bitching in the kitchen
And I know it can’t be nice,
Whatever brew they’re stewing,
They’re about to add the spice;
I seem to be the centre
Of their recipe -
I think
They’ve got it in for me.

I’m thinking that I’m sinking
And I know it serves me right,
I should never have been clever
And seen them both tonight,
Instead of fighting
With each other,
They are
Ganging up on me.

I wanted two when one would do,
Cos I like variety,
Both came in to help me sin
And they’re ganging up on me!

They’re bitching in the kitchen
And I don’t believe it’s nice,
Whatever stew they’re brewing,
I seem to be the spice.
I am the main course
In tonight’s recipe -
I think, oh God, I know it!
They’ve got it in for me!
