NAMING HYBRID BIG CATS

NAMING HYBRID BIG CATS

KNOWN/ATTEMPTED HYBRIDS

In scientific papers, the method of naming hybrids is by Latin name with the sire's name first. A liger is Panthera leo x tigris while a tigon is Panthera tigris x leo. A leopon is Panthera pardus x leo while a lipard would be Panthera leo x pardus. In 3-way hybrids, where the female is a hybrid, this would be shown as Panthera leo x (onca x pardus). A pumapard (this term is used for both reciprocal hybrids) would be Puma concolor x Panthera pardus or Panthera pardus x Puma concolor.

In non-scientific use, the usual convention is a "portmanteau word" comprising first part of male parent's name then second part of female parent's name (occasionally first part of male parent's name then first part of the female's name). Complex hybrids use the first part of the male parent's name followed by the original hybrid name.

Those in shaded grey boxes are hypothetical and to the best of my knowledge have not been bred for real. The number of hypothetical hybrids is extensive (most involve jaguars); I list only those which are commonly asked about.

HYBRID DOMESTIC CATS

Many small cat species have been crossed with different breeds of domestic cats to produce new domestic breeds and these have been further hybridised. See http://www.messybeast.com/breeds.htm for details of which domestic breeds are used in these pairings.
